ASP...cut down and other modifications of the Smith and Wesson Model 39 single / double action semiautomatic pistol in 9mm Para ( 9 X 19 mm ) cartridge. This pistol was originally conceived as a US Air Force General wanted a " more modern, lighter pistol which would be suitable for his " new and modern " Air Force. The General thought the 1911 .45 ACP pistol was too ancient and heavy for his men to carry and handle...same officer led the USA into the less than desirable Armlite AR-15 / M-16 gas blowback series of firearms and its minimum cartridge, the 5.56 mm. Both the 9mm and the 5.56 mm rounds have been proven to be below real effectiveness for military usage. Personal quirks of General officers have often saddled military forces with sub par weapons.
