Sunspel Ian Fleming 2020 Winter Collection

Sunspel has released a new Ian Fleming Winter Collection, featuring cashmere and Sea Island Cotton pieces.

Ian Fleming and Sunspel have a natural and longstanding affinity. Sunspel have dressed his iconic creation James Bond in Casino Royale, while Fleming himself was famously an advocate of the Sea Island cotton we use in our most luxurious garments - an appreciation he passed on to the Bond character in his novels.

As you may remember, Sunspel created an Ian Fleming Sea Island Cotton collection in 2018.

This season, Sunspel have worked in collaboration with the Ian Fleming estate to revisit the author’s work with a winter wardrobe in mind.

Taking inspiration from details in Bond’s novels, and using the luxury fabrics favoured by the author, we have created a contemporary vision of the menswear style Fleming would envisage for Bond in colder climates.

Since Bond’s debut in the 1950s, both Fleming and his leading man have left an enduring mark on British culture. Fleming had famously exacting tastes and an appreciation of the finer things in life; traits he passed on to Bond. Many of the longstanding, high quality brands Fleming favoured have become synonymous with timeless British style. He wore Sea Island cotton daily when writing at Goldeneye, his estate in Jamaica. 

Sunspel’s relationship with Bond goes further than just fabrics. When costume designer Lindy Hemming was asked to dress Daniel Craig as a rebooted Bond in the 2006 film Casino Royale, she came to Sunspel. Working with the team in the Long Eaton factory, Hemming took a luxury polo shirt we’d been producing since the 1950s and tailored it to suit Craig’s physique. A new icon was born, and the reimagined Sunspel Riviera Polo Shirt has been made to Bond’s specifications ever since.

Sea Island Cotton Shirt

As Ian Fleming himself wore Sea Island Cotton, he also dressed Bond in Sea Island shirts and boxer shorts in numerous novels. This Sunspel formal shirt in Sea Island Cotton poplin is a luxurious work staple, fitting for Fleming as well as Bond.

Grown and handpicked in the Caribbean, Sea Island cotton makes up only 0.0004% of the world’s cotton supplies and is coveted as one of the most luxurious materials. Prized for its extra-long staple length, its smooth fibre and extraordinary softness, this remarkable fabric has been part of Sunspel’s range since the beginning of the 20th century.

Bond can be found wearing Sea Island cotton shirts in the novels Moonraker, Diamonds Are Forever, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Scottish Cashmere Cotton Crew Neck Jumper

There are two cashmere jumpers in the Ian Fleming collection, one in Light Grey Melange and one in Black. A luxury knit which combines Sunspel's expertise in cotton with the finest cashmere.

Made from 55% Cashmere and 45% cotton. The cotton gives an airy lightness while the cashmere provides exceptional softness.

Scottish Merino Wool Cardigan

Sunspel's shawl cardigan is a great item to complete your Casino Royale outfit, when Bond sits on the deck of the Spirit Yacht calling M about Vesper's betrayal, or the outfit from Quantum of Solace when Bond visits Mathis.

The cardigan is crafted in Italian spun merino wool, knitted in one of Scotlands oldest knitwear factories. It features two front pockets, just like the Tom Ford cardigan worn by Bond in Quantum of Solace.
