The Bond Brain - Live and Let Die
In this installment of The Bond Brain we read our tarot cards, cast our spells, avoid getting chomped on by sharks, and learn how to Live it Up (but not let die).
Once again, we are talking about the novel approach to the Bond Brain, not the films.
LALD opens up with this twenty megaton quote: “There are moments of great luxury in the life of a secret agent…occasions when he takes refuge in good living…”
Write that one down five hundred times. No matter what you do for a living, there are moments of drudgery, boredom, and other undesirable feelings. Hopefully, there are also perquisites that you enjoy.
Make sure you enjoy them. For some, it might be travel on the job. If you are a traveling man, and you make a lot of stops all over the world on the company dime, hey, you are lucky. Enjoy it. Get the good Sake, order the filet, not the Philly Cheese Steak.
When I was playing secret agent man during the Cold War, we froze our government issue asses off on a mountain top listening post on the border of the bad guys, and it wasn’t only documents that we had to burn on that mountain—given the lack of plumbing. But, we had access to great German food, women, beer, and some other substances which make living more enjoyable. We enjoyed those moments of great luxury, when we weren’t saving the world from the Red hordes.
If you are stuck in a job that can’t provide that refuge in good living, well it might be time to Let Die that job, and seek something better. (This economy won’t always be terrible).
In echo of the first sentiment, later on in LALD we read, “he thought how lucky he was and what wonderful moments of consolation there were for the darkness and danger of his profession.”
Practicing divorce and criminal law, there have been for me both dark and dangerous moments, but there were also some fine women, great meals, profitable deals, and other benefits that came with it.
What about you? Are you milking those perqs for everything they’re worth? Take a fresh look at your work situation and make sure that you are getting the full benefits of your benefits. When you aren’t working, take some of that hard earned cash and give yourself some moments of “great luxury” and “refuge in good living.”
Spend some time and focus on getting more fun, more luxury, more wonderful moments from the work you do, and the money you earn from it.
This is the third novel examined in the Bond Brain: read also Casino Royale and From Russia With Love.
