Breaking news: Amazon MGM Studios takes full control of 007

Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli today announced that they have formed a new joint venture to house the James Bond intellectual property rights, and those parties will remain co-owners of the franchise.

Breaking news: Amazon MGM Studios takes full control of 007

Under the terms of the new venture, Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of the James Bond franchise following closing of the transaction.

“Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment,” said Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

“With my 007 career spanning nearly sixty incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future,” said Wilson.

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time To Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects,” commented Broccoli.

In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, including a vast catalog with more than 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows. Since the MGM acquisition, Amazon has held rights to distribute all of the James Bond films, and as a result of this transaction will have creative control over future productions.

GUARENTEED...Amazon will not allow the misogynistic, cold blooded blunt instrument that Bond is to exist. We're going to have to live with a DEI character now. Bond really did die in NTTD.

This is horrible - and not entirely surprising - news. Through it all, Barbara and Michael have been stalwart owners and Bond stewards for decades. They have always treated the work with the utmost seriousness and both deserve so much respect for what they achieved. I can’t imagine the battle scars they carry. And now this. Seems like she’s just basically “done” with the never ending battles and BS. Amazon is a giant faceless conglomerate that only cares about the bottom line, with Bond the “content” cash machine. What’s next: more game shows, cartoons, Bond’s niece, Woke 007, Masked Bond Singer, etc. etc.??? She made the obvious and right call for herself, but this is a very sad, and sadly very inevitable day for us.
Will Bond be trading his tuxedo for a cape, and his PPK for a ray-gun?
I love this franchise since my father take me to see "the living daylights" in theater... A love a first sight. I like the work Daniel Craig did on JB, but Spectre and NTTD, weren't that good. Almost a failure (DC was too old for this). Let's face it, Barbara Broccoli could not manage "the diva" and maybe it is time to retire. Now Amazon made great show (a few) : The Boys, The Expanse (originally Sci-fi), Jackal, Secret Level, Fallout, Coeurs Noirs etc... I'm rather optimistic. To Michael Foley : the "woke 007" was supposedly in NTTD. Lashana Lynch interpretation of 007 was variously appreciated, especially by some fragile men.
Well hopefully this will work out. I feel it was their intention the whole time to end the Bond franchise as we all knew it. With the ending of NTTD and absolutely no movement on a script or new Bond, the Brocolli/Wilson team really screwed us all over. So what will happen? Maybe amazon will do a good job with a movie or more than likely it’ll be like what they did with Jack Ryan or Reacher, either way I hope they keep the formula of what made Bond great
