Philips Philishave HP1328 Shaver
An original Philips Philishave Rota 83 HP1328 Shaver prop at the Bond In Motion exhibition in 2014.

James Bond (Roger Moore) uses a Philips Philishave Rota 83 HP1328 Shaver in the movie A View To A Kill (1985).

The Philips Philishave HP1328 Shaver is modified by Q-Branch to work as a bug detector.

James Bond pulls out the gadget from his Louis Vuitton washbag in his room in Château de Chantilly and Bond and Sir Godfrey Tibbett (Patrick McNee) scan the room for hidden listening devices.

In the same room, Bond also uses a Philips 660 voice recorder.

The 1970s and 1980s saw many Philips product placements in the Bond films, and this is another great example. The Philips Philishave HP1328 Shaver, as many other Philips props, was provided to the movie production by Philips 'consumer electronics' workshop in The Netherlands.

Buying guide
In 2014, one of the original HP1328 shaver props was displayed at the Bond In Motion exhibition (see photo) which gives us a perfect image of what the screen-used prop looked like.

You can still find these HP1328 shavers relatively easily, but there are a few things to pay attention to while browsing.

First of all, in the United States, these were sold under the Norelco brand, so while technically the same, the shavers there will say Norelco instead of Philips, which is not screen-accurate.

Make sure to get a HP1328 that doesn't have the text "ELECTRONIC one hour charge universal voltage" printed above the button and lights.

The little red light in the shaver was added by the prop department and is not found on the regular shavers.

Also note that the HP1335 shaver is almost identical to the HP1328 model, but there are a few distinctive differences, which lead to the identification of the HP1328 model. In the film, we can just see the little "+" sign next to the green light, which only the HP1328 has.

To identify the right model, you can also look at the rows of numbers 1-8, which on the HP1335 are in an arrow formation, while on the HP1328 they're in a straight line (see comparison image).

To make things more confusing, Roger Moore is holding the HP1335 model in the Japanese advertisement below, which promotes the connection between Philips and James Bond.

Philips Philishave James Bond Roger Moore advertisement

The photo in the ad was taken behind the scenes at Château de Chantilly and clearly show the HP1335 model. It is possible that the model was photo-edited afterwards or Philips possibly had several electric shavers on set and Moore was photographed with different models.
